KOTOKO is a Japanese singer-songwriter known for her extensive contributions to anime theme songs and music for video games. Born on January 19, 1980, in Sapporo, Hokkaido, she began her music career in 1999 as a vocalist for the creative unit I've Sound, a group renowned for producing music for visual novels and anime. Her professional debut as a lyricist came in 2000, and she made her debut as a solo vocalist the same year, quickly becoming one of the most prominent voices associated with I've.

Her early career was marked by a strong association with the game and anime industries, but she achieved wider recognition with her first television anime theme song, Shooting Star, for the series Please Teacher in 2002. This began a pattern of success that would define her career, leading to a long list of credits for popular series. A significant and recurring collaboration has been with the anime franchise Hayate the Combat Butler. She performed the first opening theme, Hayate no Gotoku!, which was released as her eighth single on May 23, 2007, and peaked at number seven on the Oricon charts. She returned to the franchise to perform daily-daily Dream, the second opening theme for the second season, Hayate no Combat Butler 2nd Season, released as a single on August 26, 2009. She also contributed the insert song Kirei na Senritsu for Maria Watches Over Us 3rd Season, which was released as her seventh single on March 7, 2007. Another notable song for the same series is Chercher, released as her sixth single on October 25, 2006.

Released as her fifth single on March 23, 2006, the song reached number four on the Oricon weekly single chart, marking her highest-charting single to date. Her musical identity is characterized by her distinctive high-pitched voice and fast-paced, energetic electronic sound, often described as a representative of the "denpa song" genre. She has been credited as a vocalist on over 150 songs and writes the lyrics for the vast majority of her own music, in addition to occasionally composing tracks. For example, on the single being, she is credited for both lyrics and composition, with arrangement by long-time collaborator Kazuya Takase. Her 2007 single Hayate no Gotoku! also features lyrics written by KOTOKO, with composition by Kazuya Takase.

Throughout her career, KOTOKO has maintained a high level of industry significance, becoming a staple act at anime conventions and music events. In 2011, she announced her departure from I've Sound to establish her own independent studio, Orpheeco, while continuing to release music and perform. Her discography includes numerous studio albums, best-of compilations, and singles, spanning over two decades of consistent activity in the Japanese music scene. Her enduring popularity led to a 20th Anniversary Album titled Redecorate Myself, released on September 13, 2023, which features re-recorded versions of many of her classic songs.
