To mark the 40th anniversary of the series, Japanese publisher San-ei (Sanei) released the mook "Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ Daikaibou" (Japanese: Kidō Senshi Gundam ZZ Daikaibou) on July 2, 2026. The 128-page, full-color A4-sized book costs 1,430 yen (tax included) and is available at bookstores and convenience stores across Japan.
This reference work is dedicated to the third Gundam television series, which aired from March 1986 to January 1987 on Nagoya TV and the TV Asahi network. As a direct sequel to "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam" directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the series depicts the conflict between the Earth Federation and the resurgent Neo Zeon, which went down in the Universal Century chronicle as the First Neo-Zeon War.
The volume brings together rare color illustrations, detailed portraits of the main characters surrounding protagonist Judau Ashta, and a comprehensive introduction to the Mobile Suits used in this war. Special emphasis is placed on a newly created timeline that traces the course of the First Neo-Zeon War step by step—from the resurgence of Haman Karn to the decisive battle for Axis.
Unlike its predecessor "Zeta Gundam," "ZZ" deliberately adopted a lighter, sometimes comedic narrative style, but increasingly shifted toward more serious territory as it progressed. The series remains controversial to this day, but is also seen as an important bridge to the film "Char's Counterattack." With the "Daikaibou" mook, San-ei presents a comprehensive retrospective that offers both long-time fans and newcomers a deep insight into the universe of "Gundam ZZ."
