The new anime series Akuma Kun, based on the manga Akuma Kun by Shigeru Mizuki, is set to premiere on Netflix this fall. The series will be released worldwide simultaneously and tells the story of a boy who attempts to create a society where humanity can unlock its true potential and live happily, with the help of some unlikely allies.
The story of Akuma Kun takes place more than three decades after the events of the 1989-1990 anime and is part of four "major projects" celebrating the 100th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki's birth. Mizuki, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 93, drew the original manga in 1963-1964 and several other entries in the franchise during the 1970s and 1980s. The titular "Akuma-kun" uses the power of demons to help the world maintain peace.
Voice actors Yūko Mita and Toshio Furukawa return as Akuma I / Shingo Umoregi and Mephisto II, respectively. Furukawa will also voice Mephisto III. Yuuki Kaji will take on the role of the protagonist, Akuma II / Ichirō Umoregi. The anime is directed by Junichi Sato, who also helmed the TV anime Akuma-kun (1989-1990) and its two accompanying films, while Fumitoshi Oizaki serves as the series director. Hiroshi Ohnogi is in charge of the series' scripts.
Akuma-kun is the first new anime in the series in 33 years and is sure to be a must-watch for anime fans worldwide.
