The light novel series "Akuyaku Reijō no Naka no Hito" (German: "Die Person in der Schurkin" / English: "Within the Villainess") is receiving a TV anime adaptation. As announced by producer Kadokawa on Friday, the premiere is planned for the year 2027. Simultaneously, a teaser visual, a first trailer, as well as the main cast and the production staff team were revealed.
The main roles are cast with high-profile talent: Miyuki Sawashiro voices the role of Remilia Rose Graupner, the villainess of an otome game world. Rie Takahashi lends her voice to Emi, a reincarnated young woman who lives within Remilia.
The anime adaptation is being directed by Yoshihisa Iida at animation studio ROLL2. Hiroyuki Yoshino is responsible for series composition and screenplay, while Reiko Nagasawa designs the characters. The musical score is composed by Shuji Katayama. The production is handled by Infinite.
The story begins when otome game lover Emi dies in a car accident and is reincarnated as Remilia, the villainess of one of her favorite games. Since Emi admires Remilia and believes she should be loved, she tries to avert the villainess's terrible fate. However, the "Star Maiden," the heroine of the game, who also houses the soul of a reincarnated person, turns against Remilia. When Remilia's fiancé, the prince, rejects her, Emi's consciousness sinks into despair. At that moment, the true Remilia, who had been present within the body all along, regains control. Changed by Emi's sincere love, she vows revenge on those who caused Emi pain.
The light novel series by Makiburo (illustrated by Mai Murasaki) originally started in May 2020 as a web novel on the platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō. The first print volume was released in February 2021 by Ichijinsha, with the second following in February 2024. A manga adaptation by Nazuna Shiraume ran from November 2021 until its conclusion in May 2025. Overall, the franchise has reached a circulation of over 4 million copies.
To celebrate the announcement, both the original illustrator Mai Murasaki and manga artist Nazuna Shiraume published special commemorative illustrations. Furthermore, the series will be presented at AnimeJapan 2026 from March 28th to 29th in Tokyo at the joint booth of Kadokawa and Infinite, where, among other things, postcards featuring the teaser visual will be distributed.
