The anime is expected to debut in July on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block. Sōma Saitō stars as the lead character Kenshin Himura, while Rie Takahashi plays Kaoru Kamiya. Taku Yashiro and Makoto Koichi portray Sanosuke Sagara and Yahiko Myojin, respectively.

Directed by Hideyo Yamamoto of LIDEN FILMS, the new Rurouni Kenshin anime will re-adapt the well-known manga series. Terumi Nishii is in charge of character design, Hideyuki Kurata handles series composition, and Yū Takami composes the music.

The original manga, Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Arc, was serialized in Shueisha's Jump SQ magazine in September 2017 by Watsuki and his wife, novelist Kaoru Kurosaki. The manga was briefly put on hold in December 2017 after Watsuki faced legal issues, but publication resumed in June 2018.

The Rurouni Kenshin manga debuted in 1994 in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine and has since sold over 72 million copies worldwide.
