During the departure preparations at Green Gables, some villagers express skeptical comments about Anne's educational plans. Gilbert shows Anne a hidden wild apple tree to dispel her concerns. Anne says goodbye to Marilla, Mrs. Lynde, Dora, and Davy. Together with Gilbert and Charlie Sloane, she travels to Kingsport, where she meets her friend Priscilla Grant, with whom she shares a room in a boarding house. On the first day at Redmond University, Anne and Priscilla register as students. Gilbert quickly integrates into university life. Anne discovers the adjacent cemetery as a place of inspiration. There, they meet Philippa Gordon, who introduces herself as a lively and extravagant fellow student. Philippa talks about her hometown Bolingbroke and her casual dealings with admirers. After this meeting, Anne feels increasingly at home in Kingsport.
