Anne receives a letter from Philippa, who is spending her summer in Prospect Point. Philippa describes her growing feelings for Jonas Blake, a theology student, and doubts whether she is suited to be a pastor's wife. Back in Kingsport, Anne encounters Royal Gardner, a wealthy fellow student, during a rain shower. He begins to court her with elaborate gifts and attentions. While Philippa decides to marry Jonas and announces their engagement, Anne begins a romance with Roy. At a ball, Roy confesses his love to Anne and she enters into a relationship with him. At the same event, Anne meets Gilbert, who is accompanied by the pretty music student Christine Stuart. Anne reflects on her own feelings and the new dynamic situation between all of them.
