A new anime project for 2026 has been officially announced. The comedy manga series "Yani Neko" (English title: Chainsmoker Cat) by NyanNyanFactory will receive a television series adaptation.
The manga, which has been serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine since February 2023, belongs to the comedy and "slice of life" genres. The story revolves around the cat-like resident Yaniko, who lives in a world where humans and so-called "beast-people" coexist. Her daily life is marked by a pronounced passion for smoking.
The creative direction of the adaptation is handled by an experienced team. The direction is led by Taku Kimura, while Takashi Aoshima contributes to the series script. The visual character design is by Riki Matsuura, and the musical score is composed by Keiichi Suzuki.
The animation production is carried out by Bibury Animation Studios. This studio, founded in 2017, has previously been responsible for anime productions such as "The Quintessential Quintuplets" and "The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You."
The main character Yaniko, also known as Yanineko, is voiced by voice actress Yƫko Natsuyoshi. Natsuyoshi is known for her roles as Sasha Necron in "The Misfit of Demon King Academy" and as Cheval Grand in "Umamusume: Pretty Derby."
The premiere of the anime series is scheduled for July 2026. Alongside the announcement, a first visual teaser and a short preview video have been released.
