A new anime film in the "Made in Abyss" series has been announced for 2026. The first part of a planned trilogy is titled "Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi" (English "Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery"). The release is scheduled for fall 2026 in Japan.
A large portion of the creative team responsible for the previous anime adaptations is returning for this project.
- Director: Masayuki Kojima
- Script: Hideyuki Kurata
- Character Design: Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda
- Music: Kevin Penkin
The animation is once again produced by Studio Kinema Citrus. The extended production team includes, among others, Design Leader Takeshi Takakura, Art Directors Osamu Masuyama and Teru Sekiguchi, and Compositing Director of Photography Tsunetaka Ema.
The main characters will be portrayed by the established voice actors from the series:
- Riko: Miyu Tomita
- Reg: Mariya Ise
- Nanachi: Shiori Izawa
- Faputa: Misaki Kuno
The film continues the story after the events of the second television series, "Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun." It will further narrate the journey of the protagonists Riko and Reg into the deeper layers of the Abyss.
The franchise is based on the manga by Akihito Tsukushi, which has been published since 2012. Following an initial anime television series in 2017 and a film ("Dawn of the Deep Soul") in 2020, a second television series continued the story in 2022. The announcement of a continuation was made as early as January 2023, with the film trilogy format being confirmed later.
The first teaser for the film was shown during a "Made in Abyss Film Concert," a concert event featuring live music by composer Kevin Penkin.
With this planned film trilogy, the popular yet dark adventure story about the mysterious Abyss continues in a new format.
