The series adapts the action-adventure manga by Kazushi Hagiwara, which originally debuted as a one-shot in Weekly Shounen Jump in 1987 and was serialized the following year. The manga then ran between 1990 and 1996 in the quarterly special edition of Weekly Shounen Jump before returning to the original magazine from 1997 to 2000. Ultra Jump began serializing the manga in 2001 and published the last chapter in 2010 before the manga went on hiatus. Shueisha released the 27th volume in March 2012. "Bastard!!! Ankoku no Hakaishin" has a total of 30 million copies of its volumes in circulation.
The original network anime, produced by LIDENFILMS, was streamed worldwide on Netflix in two parts in June 2022 and September 2022. Between August 1992 and June 1993, a six-episode original video anime by animation studio AIC aired, roughly adapting the first seven volumes.
The story follows Dark Schneider, a powerful sorcerer and leader of a metal band, who battles gods and demons to become the ultimate ruler of the world.
