The second season of the anime adaptation of Makoto Akui's manga Ao no Orchestra (Blue Orchestra) has released a new key visual. The series, which tells the story of a former violin prodigy in a school orchestra, is expected to show further developments of the characters.
The released key visual not only shows the four first-year students around protagonist Hajime Aono, but also expands the view to the now second-year students. These include Yūsuke Sakuma, who is in charge of percussion, and Toshiki Tsutsui, the new orchestra conductor and horn player. This expansion suggests a broader narrative perspective in the upcoming season.
The plot of the second season begins after the summer concert of the Umimaku High School Orchestra Club. The third-year students have retired, and a new formation of second-year students takes over the leadership. The series will focus on how the members work through their motivations and the different interpretations of the musical pieces to find a unique sound.
Hajime Aono, who reconsiders his own relationship with music and his friends, will continue to be the focus. The series continues to adapt the manga source material by Makoto Akui, which has been published in Shogakukan's MangaONE app and on the Ura Sunday website since April 2017.
The production team remains unchanged from the first season. Seiji Kishi directs, Yūko Kakihara is in charge of series composition, and Kazuaki Morita designs the characters. The animation was once again produced by Nippon Animation.
Haruka Kanako and Akira Kosemura provide the musical accompaniment. The voice recordings are led by Shōya Chiba as Hajime Aono and Ai Kakuma as Ritsuko Akine.
Blue Orchestra tells the story of Hajime Aono, a former violin prodigy who hung up his violin after a scandal involving his father, a professional violinist. In his last year of middle school, he meets Ritsuko Akine, who plays the violin passionately but inexperiencedly. Through her, Hajime finds his way back to music.
Together, they join the orchestra club of the prestigious Umimaku High School, where they meet Nao Saeki, another violin talent and Hajime's half-brother. The series follows their development, the competition among them, and their endeavor to make music together.
The manga won the 68th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2023 and has sold over 3.3 million copies.
The first season of the anime adaptation consisted of 24 episodes and aired from April to October 2023.
