The production of the anime CITY THE ANIMATION, based on the manga by Arai Keiichi (Nichijou), has released new details: The series will premiere in July 2024 and, alongside a first key visual, also introduces five additional voice actors.

New voices for quirky characters

Joining the previously announced cast are:

- Keiichi Kawara as Makabe Kakuryu,

- Miyu Irino as Makabe Tachiwaki,

- Ayaka Nanase as Makabe Matsuri,

- Azusa Tadokoro as Amekazari Eri,

- Yū Wakui as Izumi Riko.

The characters are part of a colorful ensemble living in a seemingly ordinary city—yet their eccentricities make everyday life anything but normal.

The first key visual captures this contrast: Within the anime logo, numerous figures are arranged in typically chaotic poses, emphasizing the humorous and surreal tone of the source material. Simultaneously, a social media campaign has launched, where fans can win a B2 poster of the artwork by sharing the post.

The manga CITY (2016–2021) episodically portrays the absurdities of urban life through the eyes of protagonist Nangumo Mitori (voiced by Minami Komatsu) and her eccentric acquaintances, including the enigmatic Izumi Wako (Yui Ishikawa). Director Taichi Ishidate (Violet Evergarden) emphasizes in statements a focus on visual creativity and subtle comedy.

The anime adaptation also marks the comeback of Kyoto Animation after six years without new original productions. The studio, known for its detail-oriented animation and emotional depth, promises a faithful yet independent interpretation of the source material.
