The novel source material for "GATE" by author Takumi Yanai is published by AlphaPolis. Since the start of its publication in 2006, the series, consisting of the novels and comic adaptations, has sold over 7.3 million copies in total. A first anime adaptation was already produced in 2015.

Now, the production of a second season of the anime series has been officially confirmed. It is titled "GATE SEASON2 自衛隊 彼の海にて、斯く戦えり" (GATE SEASON 2: The Self-Defense Forces – Thus They Fought on This Sea). The story takes place a decade after the events of the first season and shifts the focus to maritime operations. The maritime forces of the Self-Defense Forces are at the center of the events on the sea of another world. The series will depict naval battles as well as high-tension diplomatic conflicts.

The art direction is handled by Itaru Takahashi, whose previous works include projects such as "Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha." The series will be directed by Tatsuhiko Urahata, who is also responsible for the scripts and overall concept, having taken on these roles in the previous season as well. The character design is by Shigeru Fujita, known for his contributions to works such as "Monster," "Pluto," and "Summer Wars." The animation production is carried out by Studio M2, which was also responsible for "Pluto." Production support is provided by the company Genco.
