The popular manga "Darwin Jihen" (Darwin's Incident) by Shun Umezawa is set to be adapted into a TV anime. The series, currently serialized in Monthly Afternoon (Kodansha), follows Charlie, a "Humanzee" — a hybrid of human and chimpanzee. With the release of the seventh volume today, May 22, the manga has surpassed 1.6 million copies sold.
"Darwin Jihen" has received numerous awards, including the Grand Prize at the Manga Taisho Awards 2022, 10th place in "Kono Manga ga Sugoi!" for male readers in 2022, and the Excellence Award in the manga section of the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival. It was also selected for the Asia section of the International Comics Festival in Angoulême, France.
To celebrate the anime adaptation, a "Super Teaser Visual" featuring the protagonists Charlie and Lucy has been released. Umezawa himself provided an illustration and commented: "The production team and voice actors are 100% serious. As the original creator, I can guarantee one thing: It will be a fantastic anime."
