Kogoro Mori is unexpectedly hired by Kamiyu Takahiko, a renowned literary critic known for his sharp critiques, to house-sit for three days while Kamiyu travels to the countryside. Enticed by generous payment and free access to the house's amenities, Kogoro accepts the offer and brings Ran and Conan along.

During their stay, the Mori family encounters two unexpected visitors at Kamiyu's house. First, Ishiba Genseki, another literary critic, arrives to settle a dispute he recently had with Kamiyu at a party. Disappointed not to find Kamiyu, he leaves after a brief encounter with Kogoro and Ran. Later, Kafuka Sachiko, a magazine editor, visits to apologize to Kamiyu for criticizing his unusually positive review of novelist Fujieda Sou's latest work—a departure from Kamiyu's typically scathing critiques, especially toward Fujieda.

The next day, the police arrive at Kamiyu's home after receiving an anonymous tip about what appears to be a body buried in the garden. Upon investigation, they discover the corpse of Fujieda Sou, buried at the spot where Kamiyu had planned to build a library. Given Kamiyu's contentious relationship with Fujieda and the location of the body, he becomes the prime suspect. Kamiyu vehemently denies any involvement, claiming he was working in his study on the night of the murder.

Determined to clear Kamiyu's name, Kogoro and Conan begin their own investigation. They initially suspect Ishiba due to his feud with Kamiyu, but he provides a solid alibi, stating he was with his mistress at the time of the crime. Next, they turn their attention to Sachiko, but she is also cleared after confirming her whereabouts. Suspicion then falls on Fujieda's wife, Kumi, when a purse charm found at the crime scene matches one of her designer handbags. The possibility arises that she killed her husband for the insurance money and tried to frame Kamiyu.

As the investigation deepens, Conan pieces together crucial clues that point back to Kamiyu himself. It is revealed that Kamiyu once dreamed of becoming a novelist but abandoned his early manuscripts due to their poor quality. Unbeknownst to him, Kumi had discovered these embarrassing works and, to humiliate Kamiyu for his relentless criticism of her husband, anonymously threatened to publish them. Kamiyu misinterpreted the threat as coming from Fujieda and feared that the exposure of his past would ruin his reputation as a critic.

In a calculated move, Kamiyu murdered Fujieda to prevent the supposed blackmail. He buried the body in his own garden, expecting its discovery during the planned construction to divert suspicion from himself. To further solidify his alibi and manipulate the investigation, he hired Kogoro as a house-sitter and arranged visits from Ishiba and Sachiko, hoping they would serve as witnesses to his absence and potential suspects.

Confronted by Kogoro and the police with the unraveling of his elaborate scheme, Kamiyu confesses to the murder. He expresses remorse for his actions, realizing that his attempt to protect his reputation ultimately led to his downfall. The episode ends with Kamiyu's arrest.
