The Italian artist Elena Vitagliano has made history, as she is the first Italian artist whose works have been published in Shonen Jump+. Her manga Miriam of the Skulls was released for the first time on Monday on the website and app.
The story of Miriam of the Skulls is set in Naples and revolves around the eponymous protagonist Miriam, who dedicates herself to protecting skulls in an ossuary. The manga won the MAGIC competition (Monaco Anime Game International Conferences), an annual contest sponsored since 2017 by Shibuya Productions and Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ editorial team. Shonen Jump+ editor Hiroyuki Nakano praised Vitagliano's character designs, perspectives, and cinematography, as well as her ability to create dynamic poses that reflect the individual traits of the characters.
Aspiring manga artists who wish to participate in the 2024 MAGIC competition can submit their works starting June 15.
Vitagliano, who currently works as a manga and portrait artist in London, has published her works in Japan, the UK, Italy, and Indonesia. In 2018, she won the Grand Prix at the Silent Manga Audition. Vitagliano expressed her gratitude and excitement about her latest achievement, noting that this is only the beginning of her journey. She aims to further refine her craft to create stories that resonate with readers and deliver thrilling entertainment.
Other European artists are also making a name for themselves in the manga industry. Spanish artist Juan Albarran, based in Barcelona, has been drawing Matagi Gunner for Kodansha's Morning Magazine since April 2022.
Another manga, Bookhead by 2146, celebrated its debut on the Shonen Jump+ platform on Monday. The story follows a man whose head mysteriously turns into a book.
