"Endless Scarlet" – New anime work by Mamoru Hosoda announced

The award-winning director Mamoru Hosoda (Mirai – The Girl from the Future) presents his next film project with „Hateshinai Sukāretto“ (Eng. Endless Scarlet). The anime, which will be released in Japanese theaters from November 2024 and in the USA from December 2024, combines mythological elements with a profound narrative about revenge and existential crises.

The protagonist Princess Scarlet awakens in a surreal „world of the dead“ after a failed attempt to avenge her father’s murder. In this dark sphere, she faces complete dissolution into the „void“ if she fails to defeat her enemy and reach a mystical place called „Unreachable Boundary.“ Her journey is accompanied by spectacular landscapes—including an imposing castle in a desert—as well as the hint of a dragon that could play a key role.

A released teaser trailer shows the first scenes of Scarlet’s battle, including her determined gaze, drawn swords, and the question „Where am I…?,“ which hints at the enigmatic nature of her surroundings. Details about the cast remain under wraps for now.

In a statement, Hosoda emphasizes the relevance of the theme of „revenge“: „In a world where conflicts often create endless cycles of retaliation, I wanted to ask: How do you break this spiral? Even if you rationally know that revenge is not a solution—can we really emotionally let go of it?“ The film is not meant to provide easy answers but to encourage reflection on human abysses and resilience.

With „Endless Scarlet,“ Hosoda once again blends fantastical worlds and psychological depth, following Belle (2021). The full trailer and further production updates are expected in the coming months.
