Film adaptation of "The Irregular at Magic High School" announced

One of the most popular story arcs of the extensive "Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei" series is receiving its own screen adaptation. The film titled "The Irregular at Magic High School: The Movie – Yotsuba Succession Arc" (Japanese: "Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei Yotsuba Keishou Hen") is scheduled for release in Japanese theaters on May 8, 2026. Alongside this announcement, first glimpses were released in the form of a teaser trailer and a key visual.

The story begins in December 2096, in a world where magic has been an established technology for about a century. The siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba, who attend the magic high school, receive an unusual invitation to the traditional New Year's banquet of the Yotsuba family, the "Keishunkai". In contrast to previous years, attendance is mandatory for all family members.

This meeting serves to appoint the next head of the powerful and feared Yotsuba clan, one of the "Ten Master Clans" in Japan. Miyuki, who is considered a promising candidate due to her exceptional magical abilities, faces a grave personal decision: While her appointment could improve her brother Tatsuya's standing within the family, it would mean an arranged marriage and separation from him for herself. The family gathering leads to revelations that fundamentally call into question the siblings' relationship with each other.

The released key visual shows Miyuki Shiba sitting on a chair in a dimly lit room with a large aquarium. Around her stand the other candidates for the succession as well as her brother Tatsuya. In the background, the current family head, Maya Yotsuba, can be seen. The image is accompanied by the slogan "The most hidden and terrifying truth of the Yotsuba".

The established voice actors from the anime series were secured for the main characters. Yuichi Nakamura voices Tatsuya Shiba and Saori Hayami his sister Miyuki. Other important roles are taken on by, among others, Chiwa Saito as Maya Yotsuba as well as Daisuke Ono, Ai Kayano and Eri Kitamura as further members of the Yotsuba clan.

The film is directed by Jimmy Stone, while the animation studio Eight Bit (known for, among other things, the third anime series) is responsible for production. The characteristic designs continue to be provided by the original illustrator Kana Ishida.

Advance ticket sales begin on January 9, 2026, at participating theaters. The first tickets will be offered with an exclusive bonus: an A3 clear file poster featuring the first key visual. A list of theaters that will screen the film is available on the official website.
