Good news for fans of the Free! anime franchise! The characters will soon return in a new film, as revealed today in a trailer on the official website. The video previews Haruka's long-awaited journey to the tournament in Sydney. Both parts are directed and written by Eisaku Kawanami at Kyoto Animation, with Masahiro Yokotani (all Free! series) assisting in the screenplay. The entire franchise's cast returns for the film.

It was also confirmed that the theme song for the first part of the film, performed by OLDCODEX, is titled "Heading to Over - Version:Free -".

Originally, "Free! The Final Stroke Part 1" was set to release around the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in summer 2020, but this became unfeasible due to the arson attack on Kyoto Animation Studio on July 18, 2019, which claimed the lives of 36 employees. The first part of the film is scheduled for release on September 17, 2021, and the second part on April 22, 2022, in Japan.
