Netflix has secured the global streaming rights for Gintama the Movie 2026: Yoshiwara in Flames. The streaming service officially announced the licensing on July 26, 2026. The approximately 124-minute film will be available globally on Netflix starting August 27, 2026 – about six months after its Japanese theatrical premiere.

The film is a remake of the Yoshiwara in Flames arc, which covers episodes 139 to 146 of the series. The feature-length anime premiered in Japanese theaters on February 13, 2026, including IMAX screenings. A novel adaptation of the film was released simultaneously with the theatrical debut.

The production is handled by Studio Bandai Namco Pictures (BN Pictures). The film is directed by Naoya Andou, who previously directed Tatsuki Fujimoto 17–26, among other works. The screenplay is written by Taku Kishimoto (Haikyu!!, Fruits Basket), with character designs by Shinji Takeuchi (Fairy Tail, Gintama). Yoichi Fujita, who previously directed the original Gintama anime, served as supervisor.

The plot: Gintoki Sakata encounters a young thief named Haruta, who only steals to find his missing mother Hiwa – once the most famous courtesan of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. Together with his friends, Gintoki travels there, but they are confronted by Housen, the cruel Night King of Yoshiwara.

The anime adaptation of Gintama comprises a total of 369 episodes, as well as several TV specials and theatrical films. In fall 2025, the spin-off series Gintama: Mr. Ginpachi’s Zany Class launched in simulcast on Crunchyroll. With the addition of the new film, Netflix continues to expand its anime catalog – alongside established titles like Ranma 1/2 and a series of other licensing acquisitions.
