Everything begins with a stunning deception by Ariko. She manages to steal the valuable pelts right under Tsurumi's nose, only to then play a surprising double game by returning to Hijikata with counterfeit pelts. This back-and-forth marks the beginning of an intense rivalry between Hijikata and Tsurumi, with the other characters serving as their chess pieces.

Tsukishima, Koito, and Ogata are drawn into Tsurumi's web of manipulations. Tsurumi orchestrated the death of Ogata's father and fed Tsukishima a story about a soldier he met during his recovery. Although they realize they are being used, Tsukishima and Koito choose to remain under Tsurumi's control, a testament to the power he holds over them.

Meanwhile, Tanigaki bids a heartfelt farewell to Cikapasa. When Tanigaki realizes that Cikapasa wishes to stay in Nonoka's village, he decides to let him go. This moment is significant, as Tanigaki passes his weapon to Cikapasa, symbolically transferring his responsibility.

Amidst all these events, Sugimoto devises a risky plan to protect Asirpa. He considers allying her with Tsurumi so she can retreat into the shadows after deciphering the code. However, this plan has its flaws. Tsurumi's unpredictable nature means he may not honor the agreement, and Sugimoto's decision to shield Asirpa could end up suppressing rather than protecting her.

Shiraishi accuses Sugimoto of being too obsessed with Asirpa, causing him to lose sight of his original goal: gathering money for his friend's widow. Shiraishi also notes that Sugimoto is trying to redeem himself by protecting Asirpa, painting a grim picture of Sugimoto's motivations.
