A second season of the TV anime adaptation of the fantasy novel series "The Fire Hunter" (Hikari no Ō) by Rieko Hinata and Akihiro Yamada has been greenlit, as announced on the official Twitter account with a teaser video. The final episode of the first season, Episode 10, was released today.

The anime premiered on the premium subscription channel WOWOW on January 14, and Crunchyroll streams the series as it airs in Japan. The cast includes Misaki Kuno, Shōya Ishige, Maaya Sakamoto, Yoshimasa Hosoya, Saori Hayami, and Megumi Yamaguchi.

Directed by Junji Nishimura of Signal.MD, Mamoru Oshii oversaw the series and wrote the scripts. "The Fire Hunter" is set in a post-apocalyptic world covered by a vast forest inhabited by flaming creatures and other beasts. Humans live in small, shielded communities, and due to a unique weapon used in the last war, they spontaneously combust when exposed to small fire sources. The fire hunters, armed with sickles, are tasked with hunting flamingos, which are the only safe energy source for humans.

The story follows Tōko, a young girl who finds herself in the forbidden forest under the protection of a fire hunter, and Kōshi, a boy from the capital who protects his younger sister after they lose their mother to factory pollution. The novel series was first published in December 2018, with the fourth book released in September 2020 and a side story volume in December 2021.
