As an adaptation of Kaku Yuuji's manga, this anime shows great promise, even though it’s challenging to condense 13 volumes into a two-part season. The premiere captivated the audience with an engaging premise, fascinating characters, and solid execution.

The premiere of Jigokuraku begins with a gripping scene of a botched execution, introducing us to the protagonist Gabimaru, a ninja from Iwagakure who appears ready to die. Yet, his body stubbornly resists all attempts to end his life. Through an interview with the chronicler Asaemon Sagiri Yamada, we learn about Gabimaru’s tragic past and his marriage to Yui, the daughter of the village chief. Although he claims to despise his life with Yui, it becomes clear that Gabimaru is deceiving himself.

Sagiri is not just an interviewer but also a skilled swordswoman and executioner for the Shogun. Her true mission is to recruit Gabimaru for a perilous journey to Shinsenkyo, a mythical paradise where the elixir of life is said to exist. After previous search parties met gruesome ends, the Shogun plans to send condemned prisoners to retrieve the elixir in exchange for their pardons. Gabimaru seizes this opportunity, seeing it as his only chance to live in peace with Yui, free from the constraints of his clan.

The first episode masterfully balances exposition and action, covering a considerable amount of content without feeling rushed. Gabimaru is a compelling lead, and the audience is easily drawn into his struggle for redemption and love. As the series progresses, the stage is set for a thrilling and suspenseful journey filled with danger, adventure, and the pursuit of a legendary treasure.
