Kaina of the Great Snow Sea - Episode 9

In this episode of Kaina of the Great Snow Sea, the vanguard of the Valghians arrives with catapults, bringing the much-needed momentum to the story. Kaina and the royal siblings finally find and read the ancient tapestry, which reveals their plan to end the war. However, they encounter many obstacles, including an insurmountable oceanic trench. The trio voices their doubts and convictions regarding the plan, making them feel like real people.

The episode also deals with the bombardment of Atland by the Valghians, where rumors about the great needle tree spread among the Valghian refugees. Orinoga leads a small group aiming to capture the fortress, and Amelothée feels torn between her duty to the military and her past as a failed protector of her people. The admiral deploys a giant robot reminiscent of the giant warrior from Nausicaä, further enhancing the distinct Tsutomu Nihei-esque atmosphere of Kaina.

The development of the setting is interesting, but the episode seems pulled in too many directions at once. The plot doesn’t advance as quickly as some viewers might hope, but the action from one moment to the next is a welcome improvement. The lack of emotional vulnerability in earlier episodes is addressed, making the characters appear more believable.
