The episode begins at Kawagoe Private Academy, where Haruo Hibiki learns that the choir will participate in the national boys' choir competition. The choir is supposed to perform a lively and cheerful piece, but Haruo worries that they lack the necessary vocal range to do the piece justice. He decides they need more members and abruptly ends the rehearsal.

Meanwhile, Tenshi, nicknamed "Cardbocchi," feels like he's being watched. His suspicion is confirmed when he is pursued and confronted by some bullies. A mysterious student with a painted face intervenes and saves him. This student is later identified as Adachi, a second-year student known for his unique appearance.

Tenshi and Adachi have a heart-to-heart conversation, in which Adachi reveals that he wears the face paint to feel more like himself. Tenshi invites him to join the choir and assures him that Haruo won't mind his appearance. Adachi hesitates at first but eventually agrees to attend a choir rehearsal.

During the rehearsal, Haruo proposes a deal to Adachi: he can wear his makeup on campus if he joins the choir. Fascinated, Adachi sings a song his mother always sang to him. Haruo agrees, and Adachi becomes the newest member of the choir.

The episode ends with the choir rehearsing a new song. Haruo is thrilled and notes that the score has begun to "breathe." The choir members welcome Adachi and present him with their own unique gifts, from handkerchiefs to promises of gourmet sweets.
