The romantic comedy "Kusunoki-san wa Koukou Debut ni Shippai shiteiru" (English: "Kusunoki’s Flunking Her High School Glow-Up") by Mitsuki Mii is being adapted into a TV anime. This was announced by the production company DMM Pictures on July 23, 2026. At the same time, a teaser visual, a first promotional video, as well as the main cast and the responsible team were released.

The story revolves around Keisuke Shizuki (voiced by Yuto Uemura), who, after a painful middle school experience, attempts a radical fresh start and wants to begin high school with a new look and self-confidence. His plan falters when he meets Shizuka Kusunoki (voiced by Tomori Kusunoki)—once also an outsider, now the most beautiful girl in the grade. Yet behind the facade hides a shy teenager who struggles to make friends. She asks Shizuki to become her "friend" for a limited time to improve her communication skills. The two find themselves in a turbulent but heartwarming school life, further energized by other characters such as the scheming Ririsa Hebikawa and Kusunoki's old friend Moe Otobe.

Midori Yui, who previously worked as an assistant director on "LOVE FLOPS," takes on the roles of director and series composition. Character design is handled by Koji Haneda, known from "Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf." The music is composed by Kenichi Maeyamada (Hyadain), who worked on "Rent-a-Girlfriend" among others. The animation is produced in a co-production by studios Passione and Hayabusa Film, with Suzune Ishikawa as animation producer.

The main voice actors expressed their enthusiasm: Uemura emphasized that he wants to capture the natural atmosphere of high school students and maintain the balance between serious and comedic scenes. Kusunoki highlighted that her character, despite her introverted side, has a cheerful demeanor and that she lovingly portrays her honesty.

Author Mitsuki Mii expressed gratitude for the long-standing support from readers and looks forward to the broadcast start together with them. To mark the announcement, the series' official X account launched a giveaway: Until August 2, 2026, participants can win a signed color illustration shikishi by following and reposting. Additionally, publisher Ichijinsha is offering a reading promotion on the platform "Ichijinsha Plus" until August 6, 2026, where the first two volumes (15 chapters) can be read for free.

The manga by Mitsuki Mii has been running since October 2022 on the web portal "comic POOL" by Ichijinsha and Pixiv. The eighth and latest volume is set to be released on July 28, 2026. A specific broadcast date for the anime adaptation has not yet been announced.
