In "The Eunuch and the Courtesan," the twelfth episode of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, the mood in the palace shifts dramatically following Fengming's execution. Jinshi and Gaoshun grapple with the aftermath, discussing the confiscation of Fengming's family assets and the punishment of her staff. This leads to a far-reaching decision affecting the Rear Palace: a wave of mass dismissals, among which is Maomao, who is to be let go.


Faced with impending unemployment, Maomao requests an audience with Jinshi. In a moment of vulnerability, she pleads for any role that would allow her to stay, even if it means accepting lower pay or menial tasks. Despite Jinshi's initial willingness to keep her employed, the negotiations ultimately fall through, and Maomao is relieved of her duties.


Back in the pleasure district, Maomao must confront her new reality. She takes on a part-time job as a courtesan at a nobleman's party—a stark contrast to her former life in the palace. The night takes an unexpected turn when she encounters Jinshi, who fails to recognize her in her drunken state, devoid of her usual freckles and makeup. This chance meeting leads to a playful yet poignant exchange, in which Jinshi half-jokingly offers to buy her freedom to bring her back to the palace.


By the episode's end, Maomao reflects on her journey—from being kidnapped and sold to the Rear Palace, rising to become a court lady, to returning to a life she thought she had left behind.
