Shogakukan announced today that the youth novel The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbye (Natsu e no Tunnel, Sayonara no Deguchi) by Mokune Hachi and Kukka will serve as the inspiration for an anime adaptation set to release next year. Tomohisa Taguchi is directing at CLAP.

Hachi submitted the sci-fi mystery novel for the 13th Shogakukan Light Novel Award in 2018, winning both the Gagaga Award and the Jury Special Award.

Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed both the original light novel and the manga adaptation, describing the story as follows:

Tono Kaoru has heard a rumor: The laws of space and time mean nothing to the Urashima Tunnel. If you find it, walk through, and you’ll find your heart’s desire on the other side… in exchange for years of your own life. On the night Kaoru stumbles upon a tunnel that looks suspiciously like the one from the rumor, he can’t help but think of Karen, the sister he lost in an accident five years ago. To Kaoru’s surprise, he’s tailed by the new transfer student, Anzu Hanaki, who promises to help him experiment with the mysterious tunnel—but what does she want from Kaoru in return? And what will he have left to give her once the tunnel is done with him?
