Akita Shoten announced on Tuesday that the manga "Cocoon," written by Machiko Kyō, will be adapted into an anime. The series is set to air on NHK in the summer of 2025. Veteran Studio Ghibli animator Hitomi Tateno will take on the role of animation producer, and Studio Sasayuri will produce the anime. Details about the anime's format have not yet been revealed.
"Cocoon" is a captivating manga set on a tropical island in the south. The story revolves around San and her best friend Mayu, students at the island's prestigious girls' school. However, their peaceful lives are disrupted when war reaches their homeland. As the conflict intensifies, the students become increasingly involved in the war effort, particularly in tending to the wounded. The horrors of war gradually take their toll, causing San and Mayu to lose one friend after another.
Machiko Kyō published the manga in 2010 to mark the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II. Coincidentally, the anime's release in 2025 will symbolize the 80th anniversary of the end of the global conflict.
