The second season of the anime series "Made in Abyss" will be shown nationwide in Japanese theaters a few weeks before the start of the new theatrical film series. As rights holder KADOKAWA announced on August 8, "Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun" (Japanese: "Meido in Abisu: Retsujitsu no Ōgonkyō") will be shown on the big screen for a limited time in two blocks. The twelve-episode season, which originally aired on Japanese television from July to September 2022, serves as a warm-up for the theatrical film series starting on October 23.

The first block with episodes 1 to 6 runs from September 18 to October 1, and the second block with episodes 7 to 12 runs from September 25 to October 8. Screenings are planned at 22 locations from Hokkaido to Kagoshima, including theaters in Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka. In spring and summer, revival screenings of earlier films in the series had already taken place. The new screenings allow audiences to refresh their memory of the second season's story on the big screen just before the theatrical release: Part 1 of the theatrical film series, "Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi" (literally "The Awakened Mystery"), picks up directly after the series finale. Riko, Reg, and Nanachi, together with Faputa, venture deeper and set off for the seventh layer of the Abyss.

Accompanying the re-screening, a stage event will take place on September 19 at T-JOY Kyoto. After the screening at 3:30 PM, the voice actors of the three main characters will speak with the audience: Miyu Tomita (Riko), Mariya Ise (Reg), and Shiori Izawa (Nanachi). Tickets cost 2,400 yen; the advance lottery via Ticket Pia runs from August 8 to September 6, and general advance sales begin on September 8.

The new theatrical film series is largely backed by the team behind the second season. The sequel was announced in January 2023 and officially confirmed as a theatrical film series in August 2025. Masayuki Kojima returns as director, the screenplay is by Hideyuki Kurata, animation is produced at Studio Kinema Citrus; Yuka Kuroda and Kazuchika Kise (Production I.G) are responsible for character design. In addition to the voice actor trio of Riko, Reg, and Nanachi, Misaki Kuno as Faputa and the newly introduced characters Tepaste and Cravagli, voiced by Sumire Morohoshi and Takanori Hoshino, can be heard. The original work is by Akihito Tsukushi; the manga published by Takeshobo has a total circulation of more than 22 million copies.

KADOKAWA is also accompanying the theatrical release musically: Simultaneously with the premiere, the album "MADE IN ABYSS ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK 4" will be released on October 23. The CD features 20 tracks, including the film song "Chain of the Abyss" by composer Kevin Penkin, who has shaped the series musically since the first season. For the title, Penkin collaborated with the virtual artist Mori Calliope, who is popular in Japan and internationally. The album costs 3,300 yen including tax.
