The TV anime MAO, based on the manga series of the same name by Rumiko Takahashi, will enter its second season (second cour) starting July 4, 2026. The staff announced this shortly before the start of the new episodes, simultaneously releasing a second trailer and a new key visual.

The second cour will air on NHK General every Saturday at 23:45 (JST). Production at Sunrise under the direction of Teruo Sato remains unchanged. The team, including series composer Yuko Kakihara and character designer Yoshihito Hishinuma, is also still on board.

At the heart of the announcement is the ending theme for the second season: The song "Tayutau" (Japanese: 揺蕩う) will be sung by Reina Ueda, who also voices Yurako in the anime. Ueda expressed her delight about the collaboration: "The offer came some time after I finished the recording sessions for the last episode. I was surprised but also very happy to be able to dive back into the world of MAO. During the recording, I tried to capture the dark atmosphere of the shadowy onmyōji – a floating yet clear singing style."

The new trailer not only offers a preview of the ending but also of the fresh opening sequence: The opening "Bokura ga Uwagaki suru Sekai" comes from the group 20th Century, who previously worked on a Takahashi work 26 years ago with the V6 opening for Inuyasha.

Also heard for the first time in the PV are five new character voices: Takuya Sato voices Hakubi, Rie Kugimiya lends her voice to Natsuno, Katsuyuki Konishi takes on the role of Daigo, Tasuku Kaito voices Soma Kagami, and Shino Shimoji portrays Kagari Hosho. These five performers were announced as additional cast members last week.

The second key visual carries the slogan "A curse, a chance encounter" and shows, alongside the main characters Mao, Nanoka, and Otsuya, the cat demons as well as the high-ranking and low-ranking students of the Gokouke family, a prestigious onmyōji dynasty that Mao served in the Heian period. Mao's former love Sana and the mysterious Yurako are also visible on the poster.

Accompanying the new season, an official note account has been set up, which publishes retrospectives of the first cour as well as summaries of the current episodes.

The manga MAO has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday (Shogakukan) since May 2019 and now comprises 29 collected volumes. The English version is published by Viz Media. Internationally, the anime is streamed via Hulu (USA) and Disney+ (Canada, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand), among others.
