The plans for a Hollywood adaptation of the cult mecha franchise Mobile Suit Gundam are taking shape: Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary Entertainment have agreed to a strategic partnership to jointly advance the long-awaited live-action film project. At the same time, Bandai Namco announced the establishment of its subsidiary Bandai Namco Filmworks America, LLC, which will serve as a central platform for the international expansion of the Gundam series starting in April 2024.
The film, currently under the working title GUNDAM, will be produced by Legendary Pictures, a studio behind blockbusters like Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong. Direction and screenplay will be handled by Jim Mickle, known for series such as Sweet Tooth: The Boy with the Antlers. While the plot remains under wraps, those involved confirmed a global theatrical release.
The project was first announced back in 2018, but only through this newly formed collaboration is it taking concrete shape. Bandai Namco emphasizes that the new U.S. branch will not only support film production but also coordinate merchandising, gaming, and other media formats—a move intended to strengthen the global presence of the brand, which has existed since 1979.
The announcement was accompanied by an official teaser image that symbolically captures the iconic aesthetic of the Gundam saga without revealing specific scenes. Fans, however, are already speculating about possible storylines that could reinterpret the classic conflicts between Earth and space colonies.
