The film, originally slated for release this year, has been postponed to summer 2024. Alongside the delay, the role of the protagonist, the Medicine Seller, has been recast: Hiroshi Kamiya now replaces Takahiro Sakurai. This change was decided by the Twin Engine team due to the narrative context of the film, which focuses on the struggles and remedies of the women in Ōoku, the historic women's quarter of Edo Castle.
Kenji Nakamura will return to the director's chair for this adaptation. The film's team consists of various artists and technicians, including Kitsuneko Nagata as character designer, Yūichi Takahashi as animation artist and chief animation director, and music by Taku Iwasaki. Animation production is handled by EOTA, a part of Twin Engine.
The 2007 anime series "Mononoke" is a spin-off of the anime "Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales." It particularly continues the story of the Medicine Seller from the "Bakeneko" (Goblin Cat) arc.
