The anime is based on the light novel Oregairu, Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru, written by Wataru Watari and illustrated by Ponkan8. The novel was serialized from 2011 to 2021. The anime adaptation was animated by Studio Brain's Base for the first season, followed by an OVA episode. The second season, titled My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO!, premiered in spring 2015 and was animated by Studio feel, with different character designs but retaining the original storyline. The same studio also animated the OVA in 2016 and the final third season, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax, which premiered in 2020.
The plot of OreGairu follows the story of Hachiman Hikigaya, a cynic who believes that "youth" is a scam and an illusion. When he writes an essay on this topic for a school assignment, he is forced to join the Service Club, an organization dedicated to helping students with their problems. The story follows Hachiman as he navigates this new experience and tries to cope with a job that requires optimism.
