On Tuesday, Netflix announced a collaboration with Tsuburaya Productions for an upcoming Ultraman CG-animated film set to premiere in 2024.
Shannon Tindle, known for his animation work on Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, will make his directorial debut with this project, alongside co-director John Aoshima. The production companies will be Tsuburaya Productions and Industrial Light and Magic, with Tindle co-writing the script with Marc Haimes. Tom Knott is the producer, and Lisa Poole is the co-producer.
The film's cast is expected to include a mix of Japanese and Western stars, as well as a considerable number of talents from Japan. Tsuburaya's description of the film reveals a plot following baseball superstar Ken Sato, who steps into the role of the Earth-defending superhero Ultraman. However, Sato faces unexpected challenges when he must raise the offspring of his greatest enemy, a newborn Kaiju. The story explores themes of self-discovery, family dynamics, and personal growth.
This is not Netflix's first venture into the Ultraman universe, as an Ultraman CG anime based on the manga by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi was already released in April 2019. The final season, Ultraman Final, will premiere worldwide on Netflix on May 11.
