Netflix announced at its stage event AnimeJapan 2023 that Fumi Yoshinaga's acclaimed manga "Ōoku: The Inner Chambers" will receive its first anime adaptation. Noriyuki Abe will direct at Studio DEEN, with Rika Takasugi writing the script, Yōko Satō designing the characters, and Kenji Kawai composing the music.

The cast includes Mamoru Miyano as Madenokōji Arikoto, Eriko Matsui as Tokugawa Iemitsu, Yuuki Kaji as Gyokuei, Kikuko Inoue as Kasuga no Tsubone, Jun Fukuyama as Sutezō, Tomokazu Seki as Mizuno Yūnoshin, Miyuki Satō as Onobu, and Sanae Kobayashi as Tokugawa Yoshimune. Hitoshi Kubota will narrate the anime.

The anime will premiere in summer 2023 in Japanese, with an English release later in the year. The story is set in Edo-period Japan, where a mysterious disease called the Red Pox has decimated the male population. Women take on traditionally male roles, including that of the shogun, while the most attractive men are sent to serve in the shogun's inner chamber.

"Ōoku: The Inner Chambers" has won numerous awards since its 2004 serialization in Hakusensha's magazine "Melody," including the James Tiptree, Jr. Award and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. The manga has inspired live-action films and TV series, with a second season of a new live-action adaptation airing this fall.
