Netflix describes the story as follows:

In the time between the fall of the shogunate and the dawn of the Meiji era, a powerful bright light emitted from a wand ends the long reign of the shogunate to prevent further bloodshed as Japan moves toward a new age. Amid this upheaval, a one-eyed wandering ronin named Izou, who has lost his purpose in life, and Raiden, an orc who despises killing and hopes to leave his life of thievery behind, separately encounter a young elf girl named Sonya at the same time. Together, they embark on a journey along the Tokaido Road to safely escort her and the wand she possesses to the land of the elves in the north. Standing in their way is the mysterious organization Inferni, which seeks to seize the wand and resurrect the Dark Lord, who aims to rule all creation. Inferni also manipulates the new Meiji government in its attempt to steal the wand from Izou, Raiden, and Sonya. Along the Tokaido Road from Kyoto to Yokohama, Izou and Raiden begin their journey to protect the wand.
