The anime's story revolves around an online game called "Planet," where a team of four players, known as "The Akabane Family," rises to prominence. Unbeknownst to them, the virtual family they form in the game mirrors their actual familial relationships in the real world. The narrative will explore the characters' struggles within the game and their interactions with the mysterious "Black Bird," as well as their challenges in real life.

The cast includes a mix of well-known voices from the anime industry, such as Daisuke Hirose, Nobunaga Shimazaki, Akio Ōtsuka, Aya Endo, and others. The project is directed by Katsuya Kikuchi, with scripts supervised by Michiko Yokote. The character designs are created by Rena Okuyama, and the music is composed by Takatsugu Wakabayashi. In a nod to the virtual world theme, VTuber artist Kuzunoha and the duo Nornis will perform the opening and ending songs, respectively.

Netflix will exclusively stream the anime adaptation of "Good Night World" worldwide starting October 12. Uru Okabe, who originally published the manga in 2016 on Shogakukan's Ura Sunday service, will also release a prequel manga titled "Good Night World End" on Shogakukan's Manga ONE website in August.
