The film was shown in July at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the official selection and was released in France on September 22 under the title Le Sommet des dieux.
The Summit of the Gods is based on the acclaimed manga series of the same name by Baku Yumemakura and follows a Japanese adventure photographer and mountaineer who becomes obsessed with finding a legendary climber attempting to conquer Mount Everest. The series was serialized in Shueisha's Business Jump. The European publisher Fanfare / Ponent Mon has released the manga in English.
Netflix describes the film as follows:
"Were George Mallory and his companion Andrew Irvine the first men to summit Everest on June 8, 1924? Only the small Vestpocket Kodak camera they carried could reveal the truth. In Kathmandu, 70 years later, a young Japanese reporter named Fukamachi Makoto spots the camera in the hands of the mysterious Habu Joji, a mountaineer long thought to have disappeared. Fukamachi embarks on a journey into the world of obsessed climbers chasing impossible conquests—one that will lead him, step by step, to the summit of the gods."
