New anime adaptation City the animation: everyday life absurdities in the big city

The surreal-comic manga series CITY by Keiichi Arawi (Nichijou) will receive an animated adaptation starting July 2025. Director Taichi Ishidate (Violet Evergarden) helms the series as a tribute to quirky city dwellers whose lives oscillate between banality and absurdity.

Production Details and Style

- Musical accompaniment: The band Piranians creates a mix of pianica, percussion, and jazz elements, which is already hinted at in the first trailer.

- Theme songs: Furui Riho (Hello) and TOMOO (LUCKY) provide the opener and closer, respectively.

In addition to the previously announced voice cast, the following roles have been revealed:

- Kotono Mitsuishi as Dr. Adachi, the head of a chaotic household,

- Mayumi Asano as their pragmatic spouse,

- KENN and Keishi Inomata as their contrasting sons.

Fans can experience the first three episodes in select theaters in Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, and other cities starting May 2025. The Tokyo event on June 8 combines the screening with a talk by the main cast.

At the center of the story is Nagumo Mitori, a seemingly ordinary schoolgirl living in a microcosm of eccentric neighbors, overzealous hobbyists, and mysterious urban legends. The series relies on episodic slapstick moments, underpinned by subtle social commentary.

Arawi's original work, serialized in Morning magazine from 2016 to 2021, is considered an experimental departure from classic comedy formats. The adaptation aims to translate this anarchic humor through expressive animation and surreal, heightened sound design.
