A new theatrical film for the anime series Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken (English: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) titled Tears of the Azure Sea has been announced. Its release in Japanese theaters is scheduled for February 27, 2026.
The story takes the protagonist Rimuru and his companions to the underwater kingdom of Kaien. This peaceful land worships a water dragon as its guardian deity. When a crisis threatens the kingdom, the priestess Yura goes to the surface to seek help. There, she meets Rimuru and his companions, who are just recovering from the festivities of the founding festival of the Tempest Federation.
The plot revolves around a conflict in the kingdom of Kaien. Chancellor Djeese, considered the greatest genius since the kingdom's founding, warns the king of an impending invasion and attempts to awaken the sleeping water dragon with a special flute, the "Dragon's Tooth." Yura, who traditionally offers her prayers to the dragon, is convinced that it must not be awakened. She seizes the flute and flees, whereupon Minister Zodon begins the pursuit. Rimuru and his group get drawn into these conflicts, with Yura's hidden powers playing a key role.
The film introduces several new characters. In addition to the aforementioned priestess Yura, these are Chancellor Djeese and Minister Zodon. Many familiar characters from the series such as Benimaru, Shuna, Shion, and Milim will also return.
The story is once again the responsibility of the original light novel author Fuse, who developed the concept and supervised the production. The direction is handled by Yasuhito Kikuchi, who was also responsible for the previous theatrical film Scarlet Bond from 2022. The completion of the screenplay was reported in January 2025.
Tears of the Azure Sea is the second theatrical film within this popular anime franchise. It follows the film That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie – Scarlet Bond, which was released in 2022.
The franchise remains highly active beyond this as well. Furthermore, the premiere of the fourth anime season is planned for April 2026, which is being produced in an unusually extensive format of five consecutive cours (TV broadcast blocks). The parallel planning of the film and the new series underscores the enduring popularity of the story about the slime Rimuru.
