The new GeGeGe no Kitarō anime project has released information about an upcoming film, "Kitarō Tanjō: Gegege no Nazo" (Kitarō Birth: The Mystery of Gegege). The project's official Twitter account shared a teaser video hinting at a eerie story centered around a cursed village.

The film, directed by Gou Koga and written by Hiroyuki Yoshino, is produced by Toei Animation. Touko Yatabe is in charge of character design. The film is set to release in Japan on November 17.

This project is part of a series of four major initiatives celebrating the 100th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki, the original creator of the GeGeGe no Kitarō series. Another initiative includes a new Akuma Kun anime, expected to debut on Netflix this fall.

GeGeGe no Kitarō has a long history in the anime landscape. The most recent, sixth iteration premiered in April 2018 and concluded in March 2020 after 97 episodes. The cast from the 2018 anime, including Miyuki Sawashiro as Kitarō and Masako Nozawa as Kitarō's father, will reprise their roles for the film.

Mizuki's original manga, initially titled Hakaba Kitarō, was first published in 1959. It has since spawned seven TV series, numerous animated films, and two live-action films. The story follows an inhuman boy navigating the thin line between the human and supernatural realms.
