On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the series start of the legendary manga, a new anime project titled "Shin Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo" (English title: Kochikame: Shin Tokyo Beat Police) is being produced. The announcement was made as part of "Jump Festa 2026".
The work by author Akimoto Osamu deals with the turbulent everyday adventures of the eccentric policeman Ryotsu Kankichi and his colleagues in the Katsushika district of Tokyo. The manga was published continuously in "Weekly Shonen Jump" from 1976 to 2016. The first anime series aired from 1996 to 2004.
The animation for the new project is once again being handled by Studio Gallop, which was also responsible for the original anime adaptation. However, one distinctive design element is being renewed: The series will receive a completely new voice actor cast.
Details about the new voices for the characters are not scheduled to be announced until September 2026. In parallel, an official account has been set up on the platform X (formerly Twitter) to inform about further developments.
As a first visual impression, a teaser key visual has been released. It shows the protagonist Ryotsu Kankichi against the backdrop of the famous waterworks in the Kanamachi area of Katsushika district, waving a greeting to the viewer.
For the anniversary, a special manga series is also being released. The collection "Akimoto Osamu no Nice Choice! Kochikame 50th Anniversary!!" starts on December 26th and is personally curated by the author.
With this new edition, one of Japan's longest and most famous manga series returns in animated form, while combining proven production values with a fresh vocal concept.
