Toei Animation has officially confirmed that they are developing a second anime film in the Dragon Ball Super franchise, set to release in 2022.

The original creator Akira Toriyama is responsible for the screenplay and character design. Toriyama shared a message for the fans:

A brand-new film since "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" is in the works!

Just like with the previous film, I am taking the lead on the story and dialogue production for another amazing movie.

I really shouldn’t reveal too much about the plot yet, but get ready for some extreme and entertaining battles, where an unexpected character might make an appearance.

We will venture into unexplored territory in terms of visual aesthetics to deliver an amazing ride for the audience, so I hope everyone looks forward to the new film!

Planning for the new film project began in 2018, even before the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The film aims to tell "a large-scale story."

The film will be the 21st anime film in the Dragon Ball franchise.
