The official website of the GeGeGe no Kitarō anime project has announced that the upcoming film, Kitarō Tanjō: Gegege no Nazo (Kintarō Birth: The Mystery of Gegege), will be released in Japan on November 17. Character designer Touko Yatabe has also revealed an image for the film.

The film is directed by Gou Koga from Toei Animation, with the screenplay written by Hiroyuki Yoshino. Touko Yatabe is in charge of character designs.
The film is part of four major projects commemorating the 100th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 93. Another project is the new anime Akuma Kun, set to premiere on Netflix this fall.
The most recent GeGeGe no Kitarō anime—the sixth TV anime adaptation—premiered in April 2018, replacing Dragon Ball Super in its time slot. The series ended in March 2020 after 97 episodes, with Crunchyroll streaming the series during its broadcast.
The 2018 anime featured Miyuki Sawashiro as Kitarō and Masako Nozawa as Medama Oyaji. Both will reprise their roles for the film, though Nozawa will be credited as "Kitarō's Father" instead of Medama Oyaji.
Mizuki's manga, which began in 1959 under the title Hakaba Kitarō, has inspired seven TV series (including a Hakaba Kitarō anime), numerous animated films, and two live-action films. The stories revolve around a supernatural boy who traverses between the human and spirit worlds.
