New Gintama film brings Yoshiwara story back to the big screen

A new Gintama film has been announced for February 2026. It is titled Shin-Gekijōban Gintama: Yoshiwara Daienjō (roughly meaning Gintama New Film-Version: Yoshiwara in Flames) and focuses on one of the popular story arcs from the series.

The film is being produced as a so-called compilation film, reworking the "Yoshiwara in Flames" story arc from the original series. It includes newly animated scenes. The director is Naoya Ando (Paradox Live The Animation). The screenplay is by Taku Kishimoto, known for his work on series such as Fruits Basket and Haikyu!!. The official Japanese premiere is scheduled for February 13, 2026. As a special event, a stage appearance with voice actress Rie Kugimiya is announced at the "Shinjuku Wald 9" cinema on the premiere day.

The story leads the main characters into the secluded pleasure district Yoshiwara, where they encounter Kagura's dangerous brother Kamui and his followers. The setting is inspired by the historical Yoshiwara district in old Edo, known for its highly educated courtesans. The film's plot revolves around themes such as loyalty and personal bonds.

To promote the film, an official trailer has been released, showing a confrontation between the characters Kagura and Shimura Shinpachi and the antagonist Abuto. The film's theme song is "Sanzen" by the band SUPER BEAVER.
