Bandai Namco Filmworks unveiled a completely new Gundam animated series at San Diego Comic-Con 2026: 'Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO' (pronounced Alex Zero). The anime starts in 2027 and is directed and series-composed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex). Award-winning author Toh EnJoe (Godzilla Singular Point) serves as SF setting supervisor. The lead role of young pilot Azumi Rei is played by Takeo Otsuka, known from Oshi no Ko.

The series is the launch of the so-called 'RG Project' – a cross-media initiative that unfolds the same narrative universe in both anime and video game. Alongside the anime, the action game 'GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT' (also 2027) will be released, whose story takes place about a hundred years after the events of the anime. While the anime depicts the origins of this new world line, the game allows players to experience the consequences of those decisions themselves.

The story begins in a distant future where humanity achieved unprecedented prosperity through three 'Gospels' – gravity control, faster-than-light communication, and the materialization of thoughts. However, the alien source of these technologies spiraled out of control and gave birth to an aggressive, self-replicating ecosystem that humans dubbed 'Apocalypse.' After three months of fighting, Earth had to be abandoned; the year was declared A.A. 1 (After Apocalypse). In A.A. 45, when children on the Moon and in colonies already know the Apocalypse as everyday life, the war orphan Azumi Rei awakens. He becomes the designated pilot of the experimental mobile suit Gundam ZERO, developed specifically to combat the Apocalypse.

The visual concept of the series comes from Eiichi Shimizu (ULTRAMAN), the original character design from STATO, and the character designs and animation direction from Miyako Takasu. The music is composed by Go Shiina. Animation production is handled by SOLA ANIMATION. The project is part of the celebrations for SUNRISE's 50th anniversary.

Director Kamiyama commented: 'When I was asked to create a Gundam in a completely new timeline – neither Universal Century nor Common Era – I had many questions. What replaces the Earth Federation? What becomes of Newtypes and Minovsky particles? But then I realized: I have the chance to build my own Gundam from the ground up. That's how 'RG XARX-ZERO' was born.' Voice actor Otsuka expressed great delight: 'It's a great honor to be part of a new Gundam series. Mr. Kamiyama's story kept making me think while recording. I'm really looking forward to the media mix project.'

Teaser visuals and a teaser PV have already been released, showing the Gundam ZERO, the Apocalypse, and the dark atmosphere of the new world. Additionally, model kits (Gunpla) for both works have been announced. Further details on broadcast and platforms will be revealed at a later date.
