The spin-off of the popular "Toaru" series, "Toaru Anbu no Shoujo Kyousei" (also known as "A Certain Item of the Dark Side"), has received a new main trailer. The anime will premiere on TOKYO MX on October 9, 2026, at 24:30 (JST). In the roughly two-minute video, members of the elite unit "Item" are seen amidst their dangerous missions—including characters familiar from the main series: Mugino Shizuri, Takitsubo Rikou, Frenda Seivelun, and Kinuhata Saiai. However, the focus is also on the new character Hanano Choubi, voiced by Hana Hishikawa. The fifth "Item" candidate appears anxious and uncertain in the trailer—a stark contrast to the brutal reality in which the unit operates.

The story is set in the vast Academy City, where over 80% of the 2.3 million residents are students. Behind the peaceful facade, secret organizations exist, known as the "dark side" of the city. "Item" is one such unit that handles dirty jobs—from eliminating inconvenient witnesses to destroying incriminating evidence. The trailer showcases both ruthless battles and everyday, almost quirky dialogues between the girls, highlighting the series' unique atmosphere.

Alongside the trailer, the theme songs were also announced: The opener is titled "Ghost Sequence" and is performed by the band East Of Eden. This marks the group's first anime collaboration. The singers commented that they aimed to capture the tension and will to survive of the characters with the song. The ending song is titled "Meltdowner" and is contributed by Kishida Kyoudan & THE Akeboshi Rockets—the band was previously responsible for the ending track of the predecessor "Toaru Kagaku no Railgun T." Frontman Kishida described the piece as particularly heavy and dark, fitting the series' theme.

The production team remains loyal to the series: Direction is handled by Tatsuyuki Nagai (already responsible for "Railgun"), character design is by Shigeki Kimoto, and the animation is once again produced by J.C.Staff. The music is composed by Maiko Iuchi, who also worked on previous "Toaru" titles. The main roles are voiced by Ami Koshimizu (Mugino Shizuri), Aya Suzaki (Takitsubo Rikou), Maaya Uchida (Frenda Seivelun), Chinatsu Akasaki (Kinuhata Saiai), and Hana Hishikawa (Hanano Choubi).

The light novel series by Kazuma Kamachi with illustrations by Nilitsu started in 2023 and has so far been continued in six volumes. A manga adaptation by Strelka has been serialized in "Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh" since the end of 2023. The anime now starts in fall 2026 and is expected to span multiple seasons.
