The new Original Video Animation (OVA) of the popular magical girl series "Magical Princess Minky Momo" is titled "Magical Princess Minky Momo – Akogare no Yume e Magokoro no Duo" (roughly: "The Dream of Longing, the Duo of Sincerity") and will be shown in Japanese theaters in 2026. As announced by the production studio Ashi Productions, a first teaser visual and a "super teaser" trailer were released simultaneously.
The series premiered in 1982 and is considered a classic of the magical girl genre. The new OVA is being created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ashi Productions and is the first new anime spin-off since the OVA "Minky Momo in Tabidachi no Eki" from 1994.
Direction is by Ayumu Watanabe, known for works such as "Children of the Sea." Character design is handled by Hiroshi Watanabe and Mari Tominaga, who previously worked on earlier series in the franchise. The screenplay is by Deko Akao.
The story takes place in the land of dreams and hopes, Diginarsa, whose existence depends on the dream energy of humans. When people lose their dreams and the land threatens to disappear, the king sends out three companions to ask Minky Momo for help. The girl Momo receives a smartphone on her 12th birthday and awakens as Minky Momo upon meeting the envoys. She decides to save Diginarsa and collects dream energy. However, a mysterious app is circulating in the city where children only express superficial dreams for recognition and clicks, which makes Momo doubt the true wishes of people.
Director Watanabe commented: "For those who once dreamed with Momo, it is familiar. For those dreaming with Momo for the first time, it is new. Momo stands by people with their dreams—whether it's an almost forgotten dream or one they want to dream again." Other key members of the production team also expressed their anticipation for the project in accompanying statements.
