An anime film series based on Akihito Tsukushi's work „Made in Abyss“ (English: „The Abyss“) has been announced. The first part „Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi“ („The Awakening Mystery“) is set to premiere in Japanese theaters in 2026.

The story follows the girl Riko and the robot-like boy Reg as they search for answers in the titular Abyss – a depth inhabited by strange creatures and unexplored relics. The original manga is published digitally by Takeshobō and reached a total circulation of 22 million copies with Volume 14 (released on August 8, 2025).

The animation studio Kinema Citrus continues its work on the series, having previously produced the TV anime (2017, 2022) and the film „Dawn of the Deep Soul“ (2020). „The Awakening Mystery“ directly follows the second TV season. A released key visual shows the new characters Tepaste and Kravare in the tavern setting.
